LOCATION: POMPEI (NAPOLI)
In 1592 the Count of Sarno Muzio Tuttovilla commissioned to the Eng. Domenico Fontana, the construction of a canal that seized one of the sources of Sarno to Episcopio, after traversing the Poggiomarino Plain through Pompei and then flowed into the sea in Torre Annunziata. Ruins of Pompei are crossed for a stretch of 1.6 km, from the East Gate to the west end. Respect to the past mode of operation , when the tunnel was crossed by water used for irrigation of the gardens, the only track available on the structures are cracks, left by the strings of the buckets that were lowered from above to draw on, in the points of most friction. From the late ’70s the water was no longer present in the tunnel and , in the mid of 2000s,were created entry points of rainwater as the one near to Sannitica Gym (VIII, 7) and in Cardo to east of the House of Menandro (I, 10). With the intervention it was provided the restoration of the tunnel, cleaning it and the conveying surface water of Ruins of Pompei .
